New Children’s Discipleship Resource

April 5, 2013

kingdom-of-heaven“I began to see a real need for a book that could teach the basic doctrines,” explains Heather Goodwin, author of For Of Such Is The Kingdom Of Heaven, a new workbook designed to help guide children (age 9-12) through the basic doctrines of Scripture leading them towards church membership.

During her 35 years in ministry at our Baptist Bookroom in Saint John, NB, Heather was frequently asked by parents and pastors for available materials that explained to children the basics of doctrine and church life. Being unable to find anything that contained the depth she felt should be found in such resources, she began a long journey of developing lessons and materials that would eventually lead to the publishing of this book.

In 2011, after just being diagnosed with melanoma cancer on her arm, Heather opened her Bible to Psalm 71. “As I read, verses 17-18 jumped off the page. It was as though I was reading about my own life.”

God, you have taught me since I was young. To this day I tell about the miracles you do. Even though I am old and gray, do not leave me, God. I will tell the children about your power; I will tell those who live after me about your might. Ps. 71:17-18 (NCV)

“After two surgeries and God’s healing grace I felt led to diligently re-edit the material of this book and contact a publisher.”

The book just became available April 1st. The lessons cover foundational teaching such as:

  • How sin entered the world
  • How Jesus’ death paid sin’s price and gives us life forever
  • How our New Birth changes us to live like Jesus
  • How Baptism shows others we belong to God
  • How they can serve in the church and use their gifts for God
  • About the Lord’s Supper and its importance to believers
  • Who the Holy Spirit is and how He works within believers
  • The importance of the Bible and prayer
  • And more…

After reviewing the material, Rev. Dale Stairs, Director of Youth & Family Ministries for the CABC, made this comment: “Those who work with children always seem to be searching for top quality curriculum that they can use to prepare older children for baptism and church membership. Heather has given the church a gift with this material!”

It is available for online order through Amazon or Christian Book Distributors (click to order). You can also order copies directly from Heather for $10 each plus shipping and you can request signed copies as well (Phone: 506-849-9356 / Email: ). There is also a Facebook page with more information: www.facebook.com/ChildrensChurchMembershipCourse.

All are invited to attend her book launch Saturday April 13th, 2-4pm at Kingston Baptist Church (NB).

Congratulations, Heather!
