2008 brought big changes for the congregation of First United Baptist Church, New Glasgow, NS. January 6 marked their first worship service in a new location.

First United Baptist moved from a side street in downtown New Glasgow after buying the former St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. It became available after that congregation disbanded and members went to another church in the area. While sad about leaving their building, they are pleased the structure will continue to be used as a church.

First United Baptist’s new site is on the busiest road in New Glasgow and almost doubles the capacity of their former building. In addition, it is a newer brick structure and has a parking lot for 65 cars. The former church was built from wood in 1897 and had parking for only a few cars. The congregation plans to sell the property.

Joe VanBuskirk, who chairs the Board of Management, says the move has not been easy for some members, but they take comfort in the fact the church is the people and not the building. Furthermore, they look forward to the opportunities their new facility will make possible. “We anticipate this new location will give the congregation of First United Baptist church even more ways in which to serve Jesus Christ in New Glasgow and Pictou County.”

The formal dedication service for First United Baptist’s new facility takes place on February 3, with Dr. Harry Gardner, Principal of Acadia Divinity College, speaking.
