SUMMARY:Lay Learning Labs - February 26
DESCRIPTION:The CBAC’s Leadership Academy is launching an accessible and practical resource for lay leaders. Whether you’re a treasurer\, clerk\, small group/Sunday school leader\, we are offering sessions that help your congregation’s lay leaders to grow and lead in this current moment. \nOn the last Monday evening of the month (February\, March\, April & May)\, sessions will be offered covering various topics.  Note that they take place concurrently. You can only choose one. Some topics have more than one part\, with subsequent sessions taking place in the following months. \n Register for Lay Learning Labs here!\nHere’s the list of what is offered: \nFebruary 26th\n\nRev. Renée MacVicar – CBAC intro\, Discerning Vision. This learning lab introduces you further to this big\, beautiful\, loving family we call the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada. Plus\, we’ll explore how we’re discerning vision at the CBAC and how YOU can lead a process to discern vision in your local context.\nRev. Dr. Greg Jones – Mission Edge Churches: Home Grown/Right Size (Session 1 of 2). The common complaint often heard is that recommended resources may be helpful for some other churches in other places; but they’re not right for us.  Mission Edge Churches is a model/tool developed by CBAC churches for CBAC churches … and churches of all sizes.  In this lab we will introduce the basic precepts of Mission Edge Churches\, exploring how at its core it is simply a renewed call for all CBAC churches to live out the mission God has given to all churches in all places at all times.\nRev. Paul Ross – Ministry with those who are disabled (Session 1 of 3). A Luke 14 Kingdom Venture: Ministry Beyond Barriers – Introduction to Special Needs/Disability Ministry\nJacqueline Derrah – Refugee Sponsorship: Welcoming Strangers with Loving Hospitality. We’ll learn more about what life is like for refugees\, how Canadian Churches are key in the Private Sponsorship Program\, and some of the ways that our churches and individuals can be instruments of hope for the hopeless. We’ll consider some practical ways to love\, welcome and extend hospitality in our new neighbourhoods.\nRev. Dan Pyke – The Value of Authenticity in Next-Generation Ministry. Our students want to know that faith makes a difference in their schools\, work\, and neighbourhood. I’m inviting you to consider some of the big trends in youth culture\, and how we can respond to those trends through discipleship and a posture of authenticity.\n\n\n\nMarch 25th\n\nRev. Renée MacVicar – Joining God in the Neighbourhood. Together\, we’ll look at Jesus’s encounter with a Samaritan woman at the well. We’ll consider what it means for us and our church\, as today we join God at the ‘wells’ in our communities.\nRev. Dr. Greg Jones – Mission Edge Churches: What’s in Your Hand (Session 2 of 2). This Part 2 of exploring Mission Edge Churches emphasizes that each and every church has all that they need for at least the first/next step(s) of the journey God has for them\, but often we fail to appreciate it. In this lab we will explore the Congregational Guide developed for Mission Edge Churches\, and how it can be used to bring your congregation together to discern its calling in the neighbourhood(s) where He has you\, in part by considering all the resources your church already has.\nRev. Paul Ross – Ministry with those who are disabled (Session 2 of 3). A Luke 14 Kingdom Venture: Ministry Beyond Barriers – Introduction to Special Needs/Disability Ministry\nLaura Bennett – The Trellis: A Framework for Flourishing in Life and Ministry. Increasingly\, we see a need for next-generation leaders to be grounded in a holistic approach to following Jesus to best serve the young people in their care. That’s why we created ‘The Trellis.’ Come learn about our framework for flourishing and how it might change your personal journey\, team\, and ministry culture.\n\n\nApril 29th\n\nRev. Renée MacVicar – Discerning a Call. This lab is a conversation about what it means to be called by God and how we can recognize God’s call and leading in our lives. This lab gives you an opportunity to reflect on how God has been at work in your life and can use you in Kingdom work.\nRev. Paul Ross – Ministry with those who are disabled (Session 3 of 3). A Luke 14 Kingdom Venture: Ministry Beyond Barriers – Introduction to Special Needs/Disability Ministry\nLaura Bennett – Affordable Housing: A Spectrum of Solutions for Churches Standing in the Gap. This workshop will give you an overview of the crisis of Affordable Housing in Atlantic Canada\, while exploring a practical and formational approach to how gospel-communities can stand in the gap.\nKaren Gunn – What Church Treasurers need to know about Pension and Insurance Benefits. In this Learning Lab\, we will go through the eligibility requirements\, enrolment and contribution process\, answer some of the Frequently Asked Questions\, and share recommended practices for sick leave. All important things your church needs to know if you have paid employees.\nRev. Dan Pyke – Listening to Our Students: What do they tell us about Church and Faith? One of the most important things we can do is listen well to our students. In 2021-22\, the Youth & Family Department sought to listen to students through their Perspectives research project. Come learn what we learned from our students and the insights they have for our churches.\nRev. Dr. Cheryl Ann Beals – Growing Deeper: Exploring Relationship with God\, Self and others. We will explore briefly what it means to go deeper in our relationship with God\, with ourselves and with others.\nWe will explore:\n*The meaning and importance of relationships for Christians and for the church.\n*How to be more aware of God\, ourselves\, and others.\n*How to be intentional about relationships.\n\n\nMay 27th\n\nRev. Dr. Greg Jones – Fresh Expressions: Unwrapping It and Taking It Out of the Box. This Part 2 of exploring Mission Edge Churches emphasizes that each and every church has all that they need for at least the first/next step(s) of the journey God has for them\, but often we fail to appreciate it. In this lab\, we will explore the Congregational Guide developed for Mission Edge Churches and how it can be used to bring your congregation together to discern its calling in the neighbourhood(s) where He has you\, in part by considering all the resources your church already has.\nDebbie Barriault – Best Practice for Church Treasurers. His focus is on forging and nurturing mutual partnerships that advance the gospel and promote holistic ministry across these key regions. \nPrior to joining CBM\, Adrian served as Associate Pastor at Grand Bay Baptist Church and as Associate Director of Youth and Family Ministry with the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada. He has a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education from the University of New Brunswick\, as well as a Master of Divinity from Acadia University. \nAdrian and his wife\, Nicole\, live in Milton\, Ontario\, where they are active members of Kings Community Church.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Workshops\n \n \n \n \n \n Partnering with God and Other People to Raise Neighborhoods from the Dead – John Knight\n Has your church thought about partnering with others\, inside and outside the faith community\, to bring neighborhoods back to life\, but you weren’t quite sure how to go about it? Well then\, this might be the workshop for you! John will start things off with some brief – but important – reflection on the sound theological reasons for engaging in cross-institutional partnership building around neighborhood renewal. After that\, he will share some “best practices” and important “postures of the heart” for doing this kind of ministry work\, drawing on his 20+ years of experience as Community Outreach Pastor at RiverCross Church. Maybe you’re not quite sure how to get started with partnership building\, and you need some A plus B plus C guidance to get going. Or maybe you’ve started\, but aren’t sure what your actual role is within the partnership\, and could benefit from some experience-based advice about this. Or maybe you’ve been partnership building for a while now\, but the time and energy\, and the frustrations and disappointments\, are wearing you out – and you just need some encouragement and a fresh perspective. We will unpack all this and more over the hour we share together. And you will leave equipped with some tools to do this work in a more effective way. \nJohn Knight has been serving as Community Outreach Pastor at RiverCross Church in Saint John\, New Brunswick since January 2004. His work focuses for the most part on two neighborhoods\, the Old North End and Crescent Valley\, which represent the largely concentrations of low income in the city. Over the years\, John has grown what Community Outreach at RiverCross encompasses to include a compassionate response to needs while also tackling some of the long-term systemic challenges in these neighborhoods. This has often been accomplished through partnerships with other organizations. But most importantly\, it has been accomplished through partnerships with the people who call these neighborhoods home. \n \n \n \n \n \n Hope-filled Care & Prayer for Justice – Renée MacVicar\n Within a local church\, how do you cultivate a culture where people care about justice for their neighbours\, both near and far? How do you create a culture of prayer for justice? We’ll talk about what you can do to cultivate a culture where people are developing God’s heart for justice. The new CBAC Strategic vision is to see every CBAC church overflowing with hope\, God’s hope\, into their community – especially where there is injustice in our communities. \nRenée MacVicar ran into God’s grace as a young adult and continues to be changed by that grace every day. Renée has a passion to see everyone join God in their neighbourhoods. She serves as the Executive Minister for the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada. Renée lives with her family – Joe\, Emma\, and Isabell – in Salisbury\, NB where they like to enjoy board games together. \n \n \n \n \n \n Demystifying Reality – Lisa Ryan\n This session will lay a foundation on the current state of poverty in Atlantic Canada\, the factors that are driving the rapid increase in visible homelessness\, and the challenging future we face if we do not act. \nLisa Ryan \n \n \n \n \n \n From Knowledge to Action – Lisa Ryan\n This session will be an interactive discussion: Guided questions will lead participants to identify potential solutions to a current need within their community\, and begin identifying the steps and strategies to bring these solutions to life. Participants should be prepared to discuss their ideas in an open group and commit to approaching new concepts with curiosity. \nLisa Ryan \n \n \n \n \n \n From Passion to Action: Faith-Based Advocacy in the Canadian Political System – Jonathan Schut\n What are we supposed to do when government policy gets in the way of our ability to work for change? How can we work to remove the systemic barriers that hold back the most vulnerable people in our communities? In this workshop\, we will take a look at the Canadian political system and explore how grassroots and direct government advocacy can be used to advance efforts for a more just country. \nJonathan Schut is the Atlantic Canada Representative for the Mennonite Central Committee – an organization devoted to providing relief\, development\, and peace in the name of Christ. His interest in politics and passion for justice meet in the world of advocacy\, and he is eager to help others learn how they can amplify the voices of the most vulnerable in their communities. Jonathan lives in Cornwall\, PEI\, with his wife\, Tera-Mae\, and their dog (who still thinks she’s a puppy!)\, Lucy. \n \n \n \n \n \n Scarcity or Abundance? How asset-based strategies change our vision of God’s future for the neighbourhood – Steven Porter\n How we see a neighbourhood—and the people\, places\, spaces\, and history that comprise it—significantly determines our relationship with a community and our approach to renewal. What difference would it make to center conversations about renewal on the assets of a neighbourhood rather than its deficits? How might we avoid a “toxic charity” that robs people of dignity? Christian community development employs asset-based strategies to restore hope through mutual transformation. Come learn some basic practices of this approach from the book of Nehemiah and beyond. \nSteven Porter has worked alongside friends and neighbors to cultivate beloved community\, advocate for justice\, and bear witness to the way of Jesus as a minister\, educator\, and denominational leader. He loves helping people engage the places they live more deeply. He presently teaches at Acadia Divinity College and directs the doctoral program where his wife\, Dr. Jodi Porter\, also serves. They reside with their children in Wolfville\, NS\, where they are active in Wolfville Baptist Church.\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Team information\n “At the heart of the Justice Summit is a vision to raise up and equip leaders to engage issues of Justice in their neighbourhoods. We believe that by sending a team\, your church will be better equipped to build momentum and consensus as you get moving!” \nFind out more about how to form a great team with our Team Selection Process PDF! \n \n \n \n \n \n Hotel information\n Below is a list of hotels that we recommend for your stay. \nTruro Hotel \nBlock of Rooms reserved at the Hampton Inn and Suites \nInn on Prince (902)895-1651 \nAbide Within Bed & Breakfast \nHalifax Airport Hotels \nHilton Garden Inn (902) 873-1400 \nQuality Inn Halifax Airport (902) 873-3000 \nHoliday Inn Express  (902) 576-7600 \n \n \n \n \n \n Download Promo Package\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Event begins in\n \n \n Day(s) \n \n : \n \n \n Hour(s) \n \n : \n \n \n Minute(s) \n \n : \n \n \n Second(s) \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Pre-registration is now closed; registration at the door begins at 5:30 pm.

SUMMARY:Spiritual Retreat for Pastors
DESCRIPTION:A Spiritual Retreat is not stopping all activity\, but a change of activity. It is an intense focus on a particular activity—seeking God. It is an intentional moving away from daily routine to draw closer to God in solitude and/or in community. It involves the practice of spiritual disciplines\, such as spiritual reading\, silence\, and prayer as pathways to greater intimacy with God\, self and others. \nA spiritual retreat provides an opportunity for pastors to connect deeply with God\, themselves and each other. These retreats are a combination of group and individual retreat time. Each retreat has a theme that helps to guide the retreat but it is the participants and the Holy Spirit that shape the retreat experience. \nA spiritual retreat is an invitation to grow in freedom of spirit and openness to God. \nThe cost has been significantly reduced by a CBAC bursary\, to $175 (down from $250).\n \n Register
