Our vision is to equip CBAC churches to engage in neighbourhood level justice initiatives in their own local context. With that vision in mind\, we see the Justice Summit as an intentional leadership development opportunity. A delegate process ensures that participants are serious about next steps\, and churches are ‘bought in’ to the vision. Through a delegate process\, we are asking churches to partner with us in raising up leaders to more effectively join God in our neighbourhoods.\nRead the Delegate Process FAQ — View PDF | Download PDF\n\n\nSchedule\nJustice Summit 2022 Schedule \n(Times are listed in Atlantic) \nFriday\, November 4 \n12:30 p.m. — Doors Open \n1:00 – 5:00 p.m. — Blanket Exercise (Pre-Registration Required) \n5:00 – 7:00 p.m. — Dinner Break \n… \n6:30 p.m. — Registration Opens \n7:00 – 8:15 p.m. — Plenary Session 1 \n8:15 – 8:30 p.m. — Dessert Break \n8:30 – 9:00 p.m. — Plenary Session 1 (cont.) \n9:00 p.m. — Release \n  \nSaturday\,November 5 \n9:00 – 9:15 a.m. – Welcome Rally \n9:30 – 10:30 a.m. – Workshop 1 \n10:30 – 11:00 a.m. – Break \n11:00 – 12:00 p.m. – Workshop 2 \n12:00 – 1:00 p.m. – Lunch \n1:00 – 3:15 p.m. – Panel Discussion + Ideas Lab \n3:15 – 3:40 p.m. – Snack Break \n3:40 – 5:00 p.m. – Plenary Session 2 \n5:00 p.m.  – Closing \n\nNEW! Jacqueline has often been heard saying that refugee sponsorship is one of the most rewarding opportunities she’s ever had the ability to be part of. When she’s not working\, Jacqueline enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 adult daughters.  She loves to travel\, being outdoors\, and helping others. \n\nToo Many Muffins: Learning to Come Empty-Handed to the Journey of Reconciliation\, Healing\, and Justice Between the Church and Indigenous Peoples in Canada\n \nJodi Spargur \nDescription: Come to explore stories of church communities across western Canada who are seeking to move from learning to action in the journey of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. Hear about bold steps\, and missteps and what we are learning about showing up with our whole selves. This workshop will leverage these stories as springboards for listening in your own local context. Consider this a sampler plate for discerning future actions your communities might take in the east. \nFacilitator: Jodi Spargur lives as a guest on the unceded Coast Salish Territory known as Vancouver having worked as an urban farmer\, a furniture mover\, a pastor and a justice seeker. Jodi has been a pastor for 27 years\, including planting a church in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver in 2009 that was formed around First Nations families. Jodi currently directs two initiatives known as Healing at the Wounding Place and Red Clover Initiatives. She works among Baptist and other churches catalyzing local\, sustainable connections with Indigenous communities for the purposes of healing and justice. \n\nOpen Doors to Housing: Identifying Next Steps in Creating Affordable Housing\n \nLisa Ryan \nDescription: In this workshop\, Lisa Ryan of South Shore Open Doors will help participants better understand the cyclical and system issues that underlie lack of access to affordable housing\, while providing practical tools for participants to respond locally to the issue through advocacy\, and provision of various housing expressions. \nFacilitator: Lisa Ryan is the Executive Director of South Shore Open Doors Association and a passionate advocate in the movement to recognize access to safe\, adequate and affordable housing is a human right. Empowered by her own personal experience with homelessness\, as well as her front line experience overseeing street intervention outreach and housing support teams\, establishing and running emergency pop up shelters\, as well as leading the coordination of community resources\, she focuses on helping communities build their capacity for innovation and increase their social impact by using data driven approaches\, like Coordinated Access\, to end homelessness. Lisa currently resides in Lunenburg County Nova Scotia with her husband and daughter. \n\n\nBuilding Community and Solidarity with Our Migrant Worker Neighbours\n \nStacey Gomez \nDescription: Stacey will explore how CBAC Churches can support migrant workers in our region through community building and advocacy. \nFacilitator: Stacey Gomez is a migrant justice organizer with No one is illegal – Halifax/Kjipuktuk (NOII-Hfx). She coordinates the Migrant Workers Program\, which engages in the provision of information\, mutual aid support and organizing with Caribbean and Mexican migrant farm workers throughout Nova Scotia. Dan Pyke serves with the CBAC as the Director of Youth & Families\, and oversees the Next Generation Ministry program with ADC.  Prior to these roles\, Dan served in several churches in youth ministry.  Dan desires to see churches cultivate spaces where teenagers and children can thrive as they grow in relationship with Jesus.  Originally from the Truro area\, Dan and his family live in Grand Bay-Westfield\, NB. \n\nLearning to do Justice from Our Partners in the Global South\n \nLouise Hannem & Michael Waddell \nDescription: In this workshop Louise and Michael of Canadian Baptist Ministries will help participants better understand the links between local and global justice issues\, and how we can practically engage these issues. \nFacilitators: Louise Hannem is the Team Lead for Global Discipleship with CBM where she leads the SENT program and helps churches engage in meaningful global partnerships.  Louise lives in Halifax with her two young daughters. SUMMARY:Lay Learning Labs - February 26
DESCRIPTION:The CBAC’s Leadership Academy is launching an accessible and practical resource for lay leaders. Whether you’re a treasurer\, clerk\, small group/Sunday school leader\, we are offering sessions that help your congregation’s lay leaders to grow and lead in this current moment. \nOn the last Monday evening of the month (February\, March\, April & May)\, sessions will be offered covering various topics.  Note that they take place concurrently. You can only choose one. Some topics have more than one part\, with subsequent sessions taking place in the following months. \n Register for Lay Learning Labs here!\nHere’s the list of what is offered: \nFebruary 26th\n\nRev. Renée MacVicar – CBAC intro\, Discerning Vision. This learning lab introduces you further to this big\, beautiful\, loving family we call the Canadian Baptists of Atlantic Canada. Plus\, we’ll explore how we’re discerning vision at the CBAC and how YOU can lead a process to discern vision in your local context.\nRev. Dr. Greg Jones – Mission Edge Churches: Home Grown/Right Size (Session 1 of 2). The common complaint often heard is that recommended resources may be helpful for some other churches in other places; but they’re not right for us.  Mission Edge Churches is a model/tool developed by CBAC churches for CBAC churches … and churches of all sizes.  In this lab we will introduce the basic precepts of Mission Edge Churches\, exploring how at its core it is simply a renewed call for all CBAC churches to live out the mission God has given to all churches in all places at all times.\nRev. Paul Ross – Ministry with those who are disabled (Session 1 of 3). A Luke 14 Kingdom Venture: Ministry Beyond Barriers – Introduction to Special Needs/Disability Ministry\nJacqueline Derrah – Refugee Sponsorship: Welcoming Strangers with Loving Hospitality. We’ll learn more about what life is like for refugees\, how Canadian Churches are key in the Private Sponsorship Program\, and some of the ways that our churches and individuals can be instruments of hope for the hopeless. We’ll consider some practical ways to love\, welcome and extend hospitality in our new neighbourhoods.\nRev. Dan Pyke – The Value of Authenticity in Next-Generation Ministry. Our students want to know that faith makes a difference in their schools\, work\, and neighbourhood. I’m inviting you to consider some of the big trends in youth culture\, and how we can respond to those trends through discipleship and a posture of authenticity.\n\n\n\nMarch 25th\n\nRev. Renée MacVicar – Joining God in the Neighbourhood. Together\, we’ll look at Jesus’s encounter with a Samaritan woman at the well. We’ll consider what it means for us and our church\, as today we join God at the ‘wells’ in our communities.\nRev. Dr. Greg Jones – Mission Edge Churches: What’s in Your Hand (Session 2 of 2). This Part 2 of exploring Mission Edge Churches emphasizes that each and every church has all that they need for at least the first/next step(s) of the journey God has for them\, but often we fail to appreciate it. In this lab we will explore the Congregational Guide developed for Mission Edge Churches\, and how it can be used to bring your congregation together to discern its calling in the neighbourhood(s) where He has you\, in part by considering all the resources your church already has.\nRev. Paul Ross – Ministry with those who are disabled (Session 2 of 3). A Luke 14 Kingdom Venture: Ministry Beyond Barriers – Introduction to Special Needs/Disability Ministry\nLaura Bennett – The Trellis: A Framework for Flourishing in Life and Ministry. Increasingly\, we see a need for next-generation leaders to be grounded in a holistic approach to following Jesus to best serve the young people in their care. That’s why we created ‘The Trellis.’ Come learn about our framework for flourishing and how it might change your personal journey\, team\, and ministry culture.\n\n\nApril 29th\n\nRev. Renée MacVicar – Discerning a Call. This lab is a conversation about what it means to be called by God and how we can recognize God’s call and leading in our lives. This lab gives you an opportunity to reflect on how God has been at work in your life and can use you in Kingdom work.\nRev. Paul Ross – Ministry with those who are disabled (Session 3 of 3). A Luke 14 Kingdom Venture: Ministry Beyond Barriers – Introduction to Special Needs/Disability Ministry\nLaura Bennett – Affordable Housing: A Spectrum of Solutions for Churches Standing in the Gap. This workshop will give you an overview of the crisis of Affordable Housing in Atlantic Canada\, while exploring a practical and formational approach to how gospel-communities can stand in the gap.\nKaren Gunn – What Church Treasurers need to know about Pension and Insurance Benefits. In this Learning Lab\, we will go through the eligibility requirements\, enrolment and contribution process\, answer some of the Frequently Asked Questions\, and share recommended practices for sick leave. All important things your church needs to know if you have paid employees.\nRev. Dan Pyke – Listening to Our Students: What do they tell us about Church and Faith? One of the most important things we can do is listen well to our students. In 2021-22\, the Youth & Family Department sought to listen to students through their Perspectives research project. Come learn what we learned from our students and the insights they have for our churches.\nRev. Dr. Cheryl Ann Beals – Growing Deeper: Exploring Relationship with God\, Self and others. We will explore briefly what it means to go deeper in our relationship with God\, with ourselves and with others.\nWe will explore:\n*The meaning and importance of relationships for Christians and for the church.\n*How to be more aware of God\, ourselves\, and others.\n*How to be intentional about relationships.\n\n\nMay 27th\n\nRev. Dr. Greg Jones – Fresh Expressions: Unwrapping It and Taking It Out of the Box. This Part 2 of exploring Mission Edge Churches emphasizes that each and every church has all that they need for at least the first/next step(s) of the journey God has for them\, but often we fail to appreciate it. In this lab\, we will explore the Congregational Guide developed for Mission Edge Churches and how it can be used to bring your congregation together to discern its calling in the neighbourhood(s) where He has you\, in part by considering all the resources your church already has.\nDebbie Barriault – Best Practice for Church Treasurers. This learning lab will be focused on Best Practices for Church Treasurers to help better equip you to do your role. We will go through the Treasurer’s Handbook and answer some of the most Frequently Asked Questions\, as well as share some of the services that are available to you.\nRev. Dr. Garth Williams & Andrew Myers – Called to Serve. If you’ve ever wondered what the process to Ordination looks like in the CBAC\, now is your opportunity! From Call to Education to Ordination. Come learn about the journey.\n\n\n Register for Lay Learning Labs here!\nRegister here: https://atlbaptist.wufoo.com/forms/lay-learning-labs \n\nFill out my online form.\n\n Fill out my Wufoo form!
